Looking at the postcard, it seems clear that "A Mansell HMS Ganges" has been added later  - it's a completely different hand from the birthday inscription. Mistaken identity?

Shaun I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have just been on the phone to my fourth cousin who identified the family photo and we had agreed that the post card must be a red hearing and that isn't Arthur's name on the back. In fact it isn't Arthur's picture on the front but it is Richard.

I only have these photos of when Richard and Arthur were small but can't tell what they would look like when they were older. Which is a pity it would solve the problem. Alan

There are no Royal Navy records to be found for a Richard Mansell born circa 1880.

Yes thanks Shaun. I was wondering about that during the night. I have decided not to go by any of those photos now and just use the younger ones because I can't be sure who they are. Actually there is someone that would have known the family that I am going to speak to on Monday but unfortunately she is blind. I will ask her about the photo anyway. Alan

I think I now know who he is. Arthur Thomas Mansell birth reg June qtr 1897 Aston 6d375 mmn Spiers.

He married Violet Furley in 1923 Kent

I have his DOB, baptism, all the census's including 1939 and his date of death.

So there must be navy records for him.
