I thought he may not have been with his parents on 1901 census  ???

From the postcard address of A Mansell HMS Ganges

HMS Ganges was a training ship and later stone frigate of the Royal Navy.

She was established as a boys' training establishment in 1865, and was based aboard a number of hulks before moving ashore.

She was based alternately in Falmouth, Harwich (from 1899) and Shotley (from 1905)

That group photo I was led to believe  taken between 1896 and 1897 from left to right back row James born 1883 Annie born 1881 Front row Eliza(George's wife) Richard born 1880, Arthur born 1885 and George born 1874. George and Eliza had their first child in 1898 and she didn't look pregnant in the photo.

Thank you Lady. John Sydney is one of my relations in fact he is the brother of Alfred that died in 1892. I have him in the census up to and including 1911 in Kent, i have his navy records and he just disappeared. Alan
