I wonder if someone would be kind enough to see if they can access details from a family tree on Ancestry please?

Below is the information I am seeing but as I don't have a sub I can't access it.

Spouse:   Rachel Jones
Father:   given name surname
Children:   given name
Birth:   date/date/1841 city Saint Ann Jamaica
Death:   date/date/year city Glamorgan Wales
Residence:   date city Glamorgan Wales

I'm particularly interested know if there is anything to say when he arrived in the UK plus whatever else is stated on the tree.

He features on a handful of public ancestry trees, some of which contain glaring errors (eg WW1 papers issued 30 years after his death, residence  in Monmouth in the same quarter in which he was born in Jamaica).

None of the trees has any personal info about him between his birth in Jamaica in 1841,and his marriage to Rachel Jones in Merthyr in 1871. There’s mention on a couple of a half brother born in Guyana in 1850. Some give his father’s name as Thomas Peters but I can’t see any sources backing this up.

Thanks for that Annie.  I take it there wasn't any full information regarding his marriage to Rachel then.

Would I be right in thinking that I won't find the full details of this marriage online?  It would be interesting to see whom he named as his father if there is one mentioned at all.

Looked in all the usual places but no marriage so far.
There is a birth/baptism in Jamaica 18th. July 1841 but annoyingly no parents listed!
There's another in 1839 parents John & Hannah he being in the 2nd. W.Indies Regt.
Not much help is it.

Thanks for looking Jim, finding records for other countries is always something I find difficult.  I suspect the 1841 baptism is the one I want and as you say, no parents 

I may have to get his marriage certificate if it is not online anywhere to see if there is any mention of a father for him.

I can't see the marriage cert online in any of the usual places so I think you may have to fork out for a copy  . None of the online trees had one scanned on!

Thanks Annie, I suspected that there wouldn't be one online, so I have ordered one. 

Surprising that none of the trees had one scanned but presumably it wasn't considered important enough for any of the tree owners to get one.

There's something very odd about the PR's.
Many have just the mother's name which in most cases differs
from the child's surname.
Some have both parents where the mother is listed as "wife of" which
is obviously normal.
Others like yours have neither.
I'm thinking that a lot of these Baptisms are from women who were at one time slaves.
May be way off the mark of course but there seems to be some sort of method
being used.
You may have to take any father's name with a pinch of salt.

I would have thought that it is more than likely that baptisms with no parents could well have been children of slave women.  The West Indies was probably full of slaves brought from Africa.  You just have to accept the records as you find them and assume he was probably an illegitimate child of a slave woman.  No way to prove that.
