Address and occupants enumerated twice on 1901 census
« on: Saturday 21 November 20 14:15 GMT (UK) »
I have come across quite a few instances where a 'person' was enumerated twice on a census. Often the instructions were misunderstood and someone was listed where they usually lived but was elsewhere on the night of the census and were also listed at another address.

But I've just found my first instance of an address (as well as the occupants) being enumerated twice.

1901 census, I was looking in the Liverpool area for Marcella Keenan, born c1841 in Ireland.

and there are 2 entries, both at 6 Boundary Place
1 Piece 3492, Folio 99, page 6
2 Piece 3422, Folio 89, page 7

(FindMyPast have both records transcribed as Keenan, Ancestry has the first as Keenan and the second as Reenan)

Has anyone else ever come across this, or is it just me who gets the weird stuff?
:-)

Boundary Place is in two adjacent enumerator's districts and it appears that the address has been included in both, with different schedule numbers.

Registration District West Derby, Enumeration District 40, which includes the whole of Boundary Place, and Registration District Liverpool, Enumeration District 6 which is bounded on the east by the middle of Boundary Place.

You can see Boundary Place on this map https://maps.nls.uk/view/126523106#zoom=7&lat=1264&lon=13694&layers=BT

There is a similar topic at https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=372982.msg2469884#msg2469884 where a family was enumerated twice, in two different counties, because there was an overlap between the enumeration districts

Thanks Stan

I had looked at the district info but it still seems weird that the same house was included in two districts.

I'd looked on the old maps - though Boundary Place is long gone, I've probably walked along part of where it was, but my walk was in the corridors of the University Hospital :-)

Not much difference in the two enumerations :(
Ah, wait, Jane Wilson is niece on one, and Gd niece on the other :)

Yes I noticed that :-) Up till today I only had the one that was correctly transcribed on Ancestry and was re-looking on FindMyPast and discovered the duplicate.

gd niece is the correct relationship, maybe as Marcella had received two forms to complete she did the second in a rush whilst muttering - how many times do I have to tell them!
