Hi,

I think I have narrowed down Edwin's death in Chicago in that whilst the 1865 census does not show names, there is an entry for Ed Watson  and next door is Sarah's father and family Wm Linton. This situation also applied in the 1860 census. So it seems he was alive in July 1865

I wondered if it was possible that the City directories has Edwin listed between 1865 and 1870?

Free Sites
A number of directories have been scanned and made available online for free in collections like Google Books and Archive.org. Some examples are linked below.

1839 | 1844 | 1846 | 1855 | 1856 | 1863 | 1866 | 1867 | 1869-1870 | 1870 | 1871 | 1871 | 1875 | 1875-1876 | 1880 | 1885 | 1887 | 1892 | 1900 | 1902 | 1910 | 1911 | 1928-1929

Note: The 1928-1929 directory linked above is arranged by address; a corresponding directory arranged by name is also available. This reverse directory is particularly useful because it lists wives' names.

Hi Sandra,

Many thanks for the link to the directories - very useful.

Edwin appeared in the 1863 directory and was still with us in the 1865 census. By the time of the 1866 directory he was not mentioned. Just to be sure I will check later directories but it appears he died 1865/1866.

The directories very often refer to the previous year.
