Solved mystery birth father for adoptee
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Im giving myself a pat on back for finally pinpointing birth father of an adoptee thru triangulation s

Hopefully if i share how we got there it could help others

Her highest match was a SMITH with no tree 519 ,cm

Then a 400 cm match locked tree with initials VS for owner

The adoptee matches my mother ,her cousin and a second cousin
in range of.    107 to.152 cm

& myself and my cousin by 38,cm

the common ancestors of  the older ladies were
their mutual great grandparents SMITH & YATES

This couple had 1 son and 5 daughters

possibility was  that the SMITH name was correct branch for  adoptee

I looked closely at the SMITH son b 1852

He had 3 daughters and one son

the adoptee had a 20 cm & 28cm match to a great grandchildren of one daughter

But a 152 cm match to a great grandchild of the son

So I continued to follow the male line

Seems logical that   SMITH 1884 was adoptees grandfather

But dna  painter shows if adoptee was great aunt
the match we"d found  would be higher (even for a half aunt )

Thats where I was stuck for a while

I looked at maiden name of wife of SMITH 1884
No matches...
but found he'd remarried
 a POWELL

& there  were matches to this surname and to her mothers maiden name LEEMING

And ..they had another son JP Smith

So on the understanding that jp Smith 1918 is her birth father
I went back to other DNA matches and worked out how they could link to her birth fathers maternal mother grandmother and a generation back

* along the way I put the maiden names into name search for DNA matches and each time The 400 cm match showed up s positive
She also matched to location searches for Birkenhead & isle of man

....

I think one of Biggles charts would be helpful here

Of course we had big advantage of working from an established tree and seeing how the adoptee fitted in.
But I did not have her birth father.JP the son of a second marriage on my tree

An extra confirmation came from a cluster of 3 matches between 126 cm and 172 cm  which had small trees but surnames QUINN and BROMLEY

They are all  descended from.a sister of George 1884s
LEEMING motherin law
So 3rd cousins of our adoptee

TIP 1
Use name search and location search to suss out how owners of locked trees MIGHT connect

TIP 2
build a provisional or floating tree of higher matches and make sure you go back to great great grandparents if you can

I hope this will be useful to others .feel free to help me reword it to make it clearer

Well done brigidmac on solving this conundrum.

I am presuming these were all Ancestry matches.

Bond - Berkshire & London
Bishop - Sussex & Kent

Yes pheno
Despite being master sleuth I cant manage to load my dna anywhere else let alone anyone elses
It cant be done from ipad apparently but I may try and get my cousin to download his results to other sites if someone can send a link with clear instructions

Ps does my story make sense
I have to go back and add punctuation and rephrase or respell  when I type while still excited
