Death not registered in 1900?
« on: Sunday 22 November 20 22:48 GMT (UK) »
According to the Dublin Daily Nation on 28 May 1900, Mary Laffan nee Kirby died on 12 May at Cloverfield, Limerick. She was the widow of Richard Laffan, JP, and daughter of the late P. M. Kirby, Controller H.M. Customs Department.

But I can't find her death in the Civil Records. I would have expected that all deaths were registered. Can anyone find it?

That is a highly inaccurate assumption.

There's an Arthur at Cloverfields in 1901 age 31, so 20 in 1890, wonder why wife did not inform.  Cannot see Richard's death in papers, presumably there but it is hiding.  Not going to help, just curious.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I did have Richard's death. Strangely enough, I've just found two entries for his probate:

8 October 1890
Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Richard Laffan late of Cloverfield Pallasgrean County Limerick Esquire who died on 3 June 1890 at same place were granted at Limerick to Mary Laffan of Cloverfield the widow

23 April 1904
Administration of the estate of Richard Laffan late of Cloverfield County Limerick JP who died 3 June 1890 granted at Limerick to Arthur Laffan Esquite JP. (Former grant 8 October 1890)

chempat, I haven't found a death notice for Richard.

It’s not uncommon for there to be second grants of probate. What has likely happened is that the first executor did not complete the task, either through illness or for other reasons (never got a round to it). That must have become apparent after her own death, so the probate court was then asked to appoint someone else to wind up the husband’s estate.

Have you got an approximate age for her?

Do you know where she was buried?

Death notice in Limerick Chronicle, 15th May 1900, gives her date of death as May 14th 1900. Funeral tomorrow for Inch St. Lawrence. Seems to have been the burial place for Laffan of Cloverfield.
