Elwood Theodore Phillips 1921-1942
« on: Monday 23 November 20 21:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I wonder if anybody can help

Elwood Theodore Phillips drowned in Aberdeen, Scotland in November 1942.

His parents were Wellington Theodore Phillps, and his mother Alice (Perrott) Phillips.

Elwood was born in Alberta Canada in 1921, when he drowned in 1942 his regiment (Westminster regiment - motors was based in Sussex.

I am trying to establish why he was in Aberdeen, perhaps a relative as it seems an odd place to go from Sussex, when if taking time off London would have been the obvious choice.

Can anybody suggest anywhere I could get more info?

Thanks

Alan

He drowned between the 8th-10th of November and was found near the Bridge of Balgownie.  So he could have floated a ways.

Visiting relatives.
Visiting dead relatives.
Visiting relatives along with any army bud, had too much to drink and wandered off.
Met a girl.
Was a tourist for a few days.
Just needed a break from the war.

You could make a really long list.

There a few Phillips buried there don't see any births/marriages there that would fit into your timeline.

And I don't see it mentioned in the papers.

Don
I have turned off all email notifications, thank you.

Hi Carole / Don.

Been through the papers, but no clues to his reason for being in Aberdeen.  Will have to leave as unknown I guess.

Saw that, it's listing his death as 10th November, however from the enquiry it is listed as 8th or 9th of November, the body was found on the 10th. the BNA have an article on 10th, so body would have been recovered on the 9th.

Regards

Alan

I think you would be better on the Aberdeen board, or on a facebook local Aberdeen history group or similar.

They might know if any Canadian soldiers were posted to Aberdeen, or undertook training courses, or were allowed to travel such a long way during the war when restrictions were in place.

In fact, depending on the type of group, there could even be people on it who remember the incident.  The local history facebook group I use have discussed 1st hand memories of crashed airplanes landing close-by and they visiting the wreckage, etc.

Thanks Chempat.

I notice the regiment had an ice hockey team, and they visited Scotland whilst based in England.   They are listed as playing "Scotland All-stars" in Falkirk in 1942.

Hi ,

Have you looked at his death certificate ?
There may be a R.C.E.(Register of Corrected Entries) with further information  :-\

Quote
The Register of Corrected Entries (RCE) - the Register of Corrections Etc from 1966 - records additional authorised information about the death following registration. This usually means further details about cause of death in cases of sudden, accidental and violent deaths. An RCE reference is inserted beside the original entry in the statutory register of deaths. Images of entries with an RCE include a link to the RCE page which is free to view.

Hi EV

Brilliant, now got an An Aberdeen address. Also the house was owned by trustees of the late Mrs Nita Pope, Canada.  So there is one Canadian link, the RCE states the name c/o McKay,  there does seem to be a few people in the house and I see rooms were for rent. So perhaps just a stopping off point for people on leave.

Alan
