Thanks everyone.

Had not thought of swapping the t and s around. Looks like that is the correct way of spelling it anyway. Will order his death certificate and see what is on it.

Managed to find him on the Hamburg passenger lists on Ancestry but he appears to be missing from the Shakespeare lists on Familysearch.

Hi

Wonder if this is him - spelling, spelling, spelling  ....   ;D

BENTIEN -  Lvai (?)

Born Sweden c. 1850 - occupation :  Labourer

Don't know if you can access at above link - Petone Settlers Database.  ??
Try typing in ship's name and date of arrival.   Scroll to passengers - Surname beginning "B".

The only record of a Sven Bengtsson from the Malmö area that fits your Sven I could find here in Sweden is this Sven. He was born 17 Jan 1850 in Reslöv Parish. In 1874 he was reported as missing, meaning he left the parish without reporting to the minister first. He does not appear in any other households after this:

Hi jamcat95

True, he doesn't appear to be on the FamilySearch listing ... hence my reason for posting the link to the Petone Settlers database.

The listings in that database, as I understand it. were sometimes compiled from a variety of sources.  [Unfortunately the "sources" are not often quoted. ]    It appears that Archives New Zealand hold the "original passenger list" so possibly the Petone Settlers database has ben transcribed from that ?

Hi all

Mmm ... I wonder if the "Shakespeare" (1875-76) passenger list - as published at FamilySearch - is the "final" list of passengers for that voyage ???

It is entitled  ' List of Emigrants Engaged to Proceed in Ship "Shakespeare" to Wellington on  7 October 1875. '     It is an Immigration list rather than a ship's manifest and so there may well have been additions to it before the actual time of sailing ?

[I haven't compared the FamilySearch list to the Petone Settlers Database to see who else might have been "missing" .   And the "BENTIEN" entry (on PSD/b list - see Reply # 10 here) caught my attention as perhaps being an attempt to transcribe the name "BENGTSON".   ;D ]

Hi Lucy2
I have compared a number of names and they were listed.
I agree that Bentien is most probably Bengtsson.
