Was this Derbyshire wedding in a registry office?
« on: Tuesday 24 November 20 17:39 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to get a bride's father's name without forking out for a certificate.

Hannah Slater m John Boden in Bakewell reg district in q1 1876.

ref  Bakewell    7b   867

There seems to have been banns read at the church in South Darley in Jan 1876 but I can't find a church wedding. I know there's some clever way to work out from the page number in the ref. whether it was a civil wedding - can anyone tell?

(better still, can anyone find a transcript/copy of the marriage cert?!)

Marriage Locator Search Results
GRO Index: 1876 quarter 1, volume 7b, page 867:

Sorry, we cannot locate the church for this marriage. The entry is located between entries for Matlock Bath Congregational Chapel (RD: Bakewell) and Buxton St John the Baptist (RD: Chapel en le Frith).

It does appear to be a Register Office marriage per the Derbyshire Registrars Marriage Index (which is searchable on FindMyPast)

Hmm - is that because the index doesn’t include that normally? Or does it imply no fathers name on the cert? Is the groom’s father named in the index? and which index?

I had a look on the FindMyPast Newspapers, for 1876 Matlock and District Marriages, but nothing came up.

However, there was an announcement in the Derby Mercury, from a John Boden, Confectioner, of Matlock Bath, dated the 29th August 1876, that He was applying for an Excise License to sell retail wine. He also stated that He rented the Premises from a William Pearson of Matlock Bath.

There's another announcement on the 28th November 1876, for a Licence to sell retail Beers, from His now residence of Clay Cross, Whitfield.
