Searching for Lauchlan Cameron
« on: Tuesday 24 November 20 20:50 GMT (UK) »
I appreciate any research help on Lauchlan CAMERON, 4x great grandfather.  The only information I know is date of marrriage to Margaret BUCHANAN, 2 Dec 1780, Kilmadock, Perthshire. Records show they had 4 sons born in Dunblane between 1781 and 1789.  I have searched birth, marriage, death and census records available to me, with no results.  Any information provided for this family would be greatly welcomed.

He may have married in Perthshire but you have no proof that he was born there?

Only one entry on SP but that was 1765 in Dumbarton so too young

Have you looked at the original which may have other info. e.g. father' name & occ./witnesses although not always but always worth checking?

No, I have no proof where he was born.  Just assuming it was Kilmadock, because of site of his marriage.

Thanks you for your prompt reply.

I have had a look at the indexes on Scotland's People.

There is a record for the marriage of Lauchlan Cameron to Margaret Buchanan at Kilmadock, Perthshire, on 2-12-1780. The date may be the date of contracting, the reading of banns, or the marriage itself. There is no way of knowing without looking at the original.

There are four children baptised in Dunblane, Perthshire, to Lauchlan Cameron:

Henry, baptised 7-10-1781
James, baptised 26-10-1783
Daniel, baptised 15-5-1785
John, baptised 13-9-1789

However, the index shows that the mother's name is not recorded in these entries. You would have to have other evidence to confirm that the mother was Margaret Buchanan.

I am assuming you have not seen the actual entries. The witnesses to the baptisms may be helpful.

The marriage data matches what I found on another site.  The baptism dates for the sons relate to their birth dates which I also found on another site.  I agree that I need another site to confirm Margaret Buchanan as the mother.

I apprecite your help.  Thanks.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I appreciate your taking the time to send me this extremely informative link.  I heartedly agree that ScotlandsPeople with it's original documents is the best source, no doubt, for my research.  I'm spoiled by U S  sites which for the most part are free, with the exception of Ancestry, which requires a subscription.  However, the costs for ScotlandsPeople are pretty hefty.

Thank you again.
