RAF badges on uniform
« on: Wednesday 25 November 20 15:53 GMT (UK) »
This is a long shot but I wonder if anyone can identify any of the badges on the upper arm of this airman's jacket sleeve? They are barely discernible to me, but I know from past experience that several RootsChat members are adept at answering such questions.

The photograph was taken in 1942 in Torquay, his rank* was LAC (Leading Aircraft man?) and he was with 140 Squadron based at Mount Farm, Dorchester on Thames.(* was LAC a rank?)

Also, am I right in thinking that that the single chevron on his left sleeve is that of Lance Corporal?

LAC - Leading Aircraftman is a rank in the RAF but Lance Corporal is an army rank. The chevron will be a good conduct stripe awarded at 3 years, 8 yrs or 13 yrs if it's on the lower section of the left sleeve.

a picture would help.

There will be the RAF eagle at the top of both sleeves the LAC rank is a 2 bladed propeller that will be below the eagles, on the upper part of both sleeves.

This link may help

What you think is a chevron could be the two bladed horizontal propeller rank insignia

My apologies for not in including the photo - as soon as I realised I tried modifying the message to add the image, but failed! Hopefully it is attached now, but in the meantime thank you for the responses so far.

note that that picture is a modern uniform of the RAF Regiment hence the letters at the top of the sleeve - only RAF Regiment have this. Have now found a RAF uniform that should be the same

Top of sleeves RAF Eagle both arms

next badge that could denote signals or electrics/electronics under eagle right arm

then LAC badges both arms

What I think is a  chevron is at the top of the man's left hand sleeve medpat. You say that it is a 'modern' uniform - what do you mean by 'modern'?

Do you mean what looks like an inverted chevron under the RAF insignia on the left sleeve?
