Which John Brookmyre
« on: Thursday 26 November 20 20:40 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Brookmyre side of my family.

I have a John Brookmyre, born 1891 and a John Brookmyre, born 1895 who are cousins.

John (1891) was killed in action at the Battle of Flanders in August 1918. He was with the 52 division, 1/5 City of Glasgow Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (HLI), number 1619, 200232.

I have a photograph of a soldier in military Highland dress and it is annotated John Brookmyre, born 1885. It appears to me that the uniform is of the Highland Light Infantry. I am not sure if this photo identifies the correct John.

I am having difficulty identifying John (1895) as part of a military unit.

I have found a John Brookmyre with army numbers 4184, 150523, 251689 and 276226 but his birthdate appears to be 1884-1886. His units are the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders and the Royal Engineers.

There is another John Brookmyre who was in the HLI and his army number is 333779. I know nothing more of him. Could he be born 1885?

There is also a Hugh Brookmyre who was in the Cameron Highlanders, number 24069 and L.C.?? number 3681. He might be a brother of John (1895).

Can anyone assist with filling in some gaps to allow me to properly identify the John in the photo.

Possibly 6th. Btn HLI.
They had 3 white tassels & also looks like the Mackenzie tartan kilt which they wore.
I can't say if the 1/5th. HLI had the same.
Both were TF so both were subject to the number change in 1917.

Thanks Jim.

http://scottishmilitaryresearch.weebly.com/uploads/7/3/9/1/73918079/scottish_military_research_using_family_photographs.pdf

is a site which helps identify Scottish Regiments.

I am hoping someone can access military records to see if they can identify and confirm the birthdate of John (1895).

John Brookmyre, 333779 is my best guess for this man.
