Can you solve a mystery ?
« on: Friday 27 November 20 00:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am having trouble clarifying and finding information about my third great grandfather and his family, Peter Freeman, a shipbuilder from Ireland. He seems to be a bit of an enigma.

He is written on my second great grandmother, Bridget Freeman's marriage certificate, as being her father.

Bridget Freeman was also born in Ireland but moved to England and married David McDowell in 1875, in Manchester.

I maybe wrong, but with what I have found I believe Peter Freeman's family history may go like this:

Unsure: Peter Freeman baptised October 8, 1831 in Kildare Ireland by Patin Freeman & Mary.

Unsure: Peter Freeman's first daughter M Anne Freeman baptised June 1, 1851 in Kingstown, Dublin, Ireland by Peter Freeman & Mary Keegan.

Unsure: Peter Freeman's second daughter Bridget Freeman possibly baptised April 28, 1856 in Dublin, Ireland by Peter Freeman & Mary Keegan.

Definite: Peter Freeman's daughter Bridget Freeman & David McDowell marry July 3, 1875, in Manchester, Lancashire, England. Peter Freeman is listed as father of Bridget and occupation is a shipbuilder. Bridget Freeman's implied year of birth is 1855.

If anyone can find anymore information on Peter Freeman and his wife Mary Keegan, and their time with their daughters M Anne and Bridget Freeman, I would greatly appreciate it. Did he move to England as well or did he stay on in Ireland ?

Thankyou kindly in advance for your help.

Jane

If you look at Familysearch 1861 Census there is a possible Peter Freeman born c 1823 Ireland and Family living in Lancashire.
In the household is Bridget age 5

I see that someone has a 1871 Census for possible Bridget with parents in Yorkshire.
The Ellen age 5 in that Census appears to be on GRO as Ellen Freman, mmn Morley, and John mmn Maley.

You are amazing ! Thankyou so much ! Yes I can't find them on ancestry in the 1861 census either but all the details from family search census results look to be correct and especially since the GRO index has John Freeman b 1860 with mmn Keegan ! Wow. I thought it was strange that nothing was turning up on ancestry. Doesn't give me a good impression of ancestry with the information being there but not appearing. You've given me so much to go on and I can't thankyou enough.

Ancestry 1861 census appears to jump from 48/21 to 56/37, so missing out 50/26 when one looks at the images.

The information is not there (on Ancestry) for whatever reason.

Have reported it.

"Doesn't give me a good impression of ancestry with the information being there but not appearing."

I've found the same with Ancestry. They appear to have simply uploaded information without any real attempt to catalogue it correctly, and they don't spend any time checking what has been posted (my wife's great uncle was recorded by one optimist as still working as a truck driver at the ripe old age of 122 years!). God help you trying to find Victorian (Australia) teacher records.

Good luck with your search. Trish is brilliant, by the way.
