« on: Friday 27 November 20 18:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi
Can some one please tell me if the following is likely to be a first Cousin to me, if so am I right in thinking that we share the same grandparent.

Shared DNA: 605 cM across 22 segments
Unweighted shared DNA: 605 cM
Longest segment: 85 cM

Thanks

There is a useful free tool on DNApainter.com

https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4

that allows you to enter the cM total you share and it gives a list of potential relationships. For your 605 cM it suggested

Relationship probabilities (based on stats from The DNA Geek)

74% Great-Great-Aunt / Uncle Half Great-Aunt / Uncle Half 1C 1C1R Half Great-Niece / Nephew Great-Great-Niece / Nephew

24% Great-Grandparent Great-Aunt / Uncle Half Aunt / Uncle 1C Half Niece / Nephew Great-Niece / Nephew Great-Grandchild

2%* Great-Great-Great-Grandparent Great-Great-Great-Grandchild GGG Aunt / Uncle Great-Great-Great-Aunt / Uncle Half GG-Niece / Nephew Half GG-Aunt / Uncle Half Great-Great-Niece / Nephew Half Great-Great-Aunt / Uncle Half Great-Great-Niece / Nephew 1C2R 2C Half 1C1R

It also presents it in a clear table format

It suggests you are more likely to share great grandparents
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I agree or quite likely to have one grandparent in common ..do you know if any of your grandparents had second marriages or children outside or before marriage

You.ll have to look at all siblings of your grandparents to see if they could be the link

It is important to understand the approximate age of your match to you. Where they sit in terms of generation will focus the relationship to you based on CMs.
