Post Office Lane, Burrowgate, Penrith
« on: Sunday 29 November 20 12:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, another mystery to me. On a baptism in 1850 the residence is listed as Post Office Lane Burrowgate. I have tried to search around with no joy. Does anyone have an old map of the area? I presume it either no longer exists or the name has been changed as Google doesn't help unfortunately.

Thanks in advance!

Post Office Lane is certainly there in 1851 - census reference HO107/2425 folio 165, page 8.

Other streets mentioned are - Market Place, Front Street, Dockray and Angel Lane.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you BumbleB,

Although the son was baptised in 1850 with post office lane being their residence, on the 1851 Census they are in Penrith Workhouse. However as I am unable to find any record earlier than 1850 for the parents, I was hoping the address in Post Office Lane might give me some more info.

The birth certificate only specifies Burrowgate and the mothers maiden name hasnt helped me either.

Penrith Museum might be able to help. They are presently closed but have a Facebook and Twitter presence according to their website.

Hi All, many thanks for the replies.

A local reverend has told me that Post Office Lane is now called Rowcliffe Lane. I am not local to the area myself so its on my list of places to visit when I can get to the area to continue research, I appreciate all the replies and thanks for the help!

Rowcliffe Lane shows on that old map I posted, between King Street and Princes Street.

Both it and Post Office Lane show on the 1851 census.

Indeed it does, my apologies as it didn't seem to want to navigate when I first tried. Maybe he meant it was a lane that went onto Rowcliffe lane?  As I have also read elsewhere that Rowcliffe Lane dates back further than 1850. He seemed pretty sure in his email and he is the Rev of St. Andrews. Although I also can't seem to find Front street in the map posted either.

I'll take another look but it does appear that the small little lanes are not names on the map and only the larger ones are?

Yes, the little lanes are not named on that map.

It could be that Rowcliffe Lane took over Post Office Lane.

Rowcliffe has 185 people in 1851 and 235 in 1861.

Post Office Lane had 56 in 1851, and does not show (on F M P) in 1861.

Have not looked to see how much nearby populations of lanes have changed, in comparison.

However, Rowcliffe is back down to 168 in 1871, so figures are pretty meaningless.
