Blunt 1861 and 1871 censuses
« on: Sunday 29 November 20 13:15 GMT (UK) »
I cannot find Elizabeth Blunt bc 1790 Gosport, Hampshire in the 1861 census,  and her son Edward bc 1825 Ireland and his wife Johanna bc 1838 Exeter in the 1871 census.

Earlier censuses and OPRs show they had lived in the Exeter St Mary Major area. All three had appeared in the courts in the past and I wonder if they might have been in prison. If so would they be recorded?

Ouse who.

Elizabeth (née Short) died 1863 Exeter, Johanna (née Hunns) was a widow by 1881. Edward may have already died.

It looks like Edward was sentenced to 10 years for larceny in 1867.  He may be recorded under just his initials if he was in prison.

PaulineJ - the deaths refer to two of the children of Edward and Johanna. Seems there were many early deaths in the Blunt families most of whom lived in Coombe Street, Exeter.

Dundee - where did you find the 1867 conviction - that one eluded me! Any idea where he might have been imprisoned?

Cath151 & Trish1120 - yes I have seen those records thank you..

It is in the criminal registers on Ancestry as Edward BLOUNT, 4 previous convictions.

From Findmypast:

27 September 1862 - Western Times - Exeter, Devon, England
Edward Blunt, man in tbe garb of sailor, was charged with stealing a bar of pig iron on tbe 19th, the property of Mr. Thomas Kerslake

27 April 1866 - Exeter and Plymouth Gazette - Exeter, Devon, England
Edward Blunt was summoned by his wife, Johanna Blunt, for assaulting her on the previous Monday, by beating her, and pulling her out....

27 April 1866 - Western Times - Exeter, Devon, England
Edward Blunt, who was too drunk yesterday to receive sentence for the ill-usage of his wife, was now sentenced to a fortnight's imprisonment

18 October 1867 - Western Times - Exeter, Devon, England
Edward Blount, sailor, charged with stealing barley, was sentenced to ten years penal servitude.

Yikes!

Thank you. I was familiar from Genuki's Exeter Court sessions pages of earlier transgressions and mentions in the newspapers - but the 1866 and 1867 offences are new to me.  :-[

So Edward is definitely in prison somewhere.
