Old Dublin Pub / Shop
« on: Sunday 29 November 20 20:18 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate a pub that was called 'Bugler(s)' which was located in and around Bath Lane and Grenville Street.  I have a picture of a shop which I believe was very near it.  The shop was owned by a William Taylor.  I haven't been able to locate the Taylor shop or the Bugler Pub in any old historic references so far.  I am told it was on the corner of Bath Lane and Grenville Street but also that is was on Middle Gardiner Street between Parnell Street & Mountjoy Square.  Plan is if I find where the pub was I find the shop or visa versa.  Picture of shop attached.

Any help appreciated.

Sandra

I can't help with the location of the Bugler Pub but have you seen this 1888-1913 map from GeoHive.

I am told it was on the corner of Bath Lane and Grenville Street.......

On the map, Bath Lane is parallel to Grenville Street and intersects with Grenville Lane. Use the transparency slider to compare with current day Dublin map.

not sure timeframe you are interested in, a possible match from Thom's 1935, a T.J. Bugler 27 Hill St., wine and spirit merchant

Hill street is very close to Grenvill st. and beside Parnell street

not sure if related to your photo, but it's the same area - the same 1935 listing has an M. Taylor horse shoer 2 Bath lane, and the civil marriages have a William Taylor married from the same address in 1922

Great work everyone.

I think you should all be private detectives.  I knew about the marriage alright and the Taylor family ran a forge and piggery in Bath Lane for years.  William Taylor who ran the shop (I believe) was the son of Michael Taylor and Rosanna Donnelly who moved into Dublin City from Portmarnock in the late 1800s (where they also ran a forge and shod the horses for the Jameson family).  Apparently William was a regular (very regular) in the pub next door so was interested to see the location of the shop and nearby pub.

I will continue my research so thanks a million for the pointers.

Warm wishes

Sandra
