Puzzled. Birth record with no first name.
« on: Wednesday 02 December 20 13:03 GMT (UK) »
I've hit a brick wall and would welcome any help tips or info.

My difficulty is with Michael McNally who married Mary Cannon in 1904 St Maurs Rush Co Dublin. I can't find any birth records for him.
Marriage record shows his address as Chapolizod profession Plummer and his father is named Charles profession Sailor.
Family lore has him arriving to Rush from Scotland to work on a nearby hospital. This is backed up by his appearance in the 1901 Scottish Census, as a border occupation Plummer, born Ireland. Age given in both 1901 and 1911 census gives 1875 as the year of his birth. 1911 census he gives City of Dublin as place of birth.
I have searched for birth records and baptism's for a Michael McNally 1870-1876 but can find no match. However, I found a record for an unnamed McNally born May 14th 1875 in the Rotunda Hospital. The parents are listed as Joseph McNally, a sailor from Kingstown and Emily McNally formerly Doyle. Same details also listed in Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911.
Do you think its safe to assume the unnamed Rotunda McNally is Michael McNally? I'm thinking how many Sailors named McNally would have fathered a male child born in Dublin in 1875?
I'm trying to find a marriage record for either Joseph McNally or Charles McNally and an Emily Doyle which hopefully might shed some more light.
Michael had sons named Joseph and Charles so both names run through the family.

I see that one, but he is a mason's labourer, not a plumber.

Yes you're right sorry about that its plumber on the marriage cert. Honestly not surprised if he promoted himself.

Thanks very much for that
I'm thinking coincidence put then again I've no way of knowing. Theres no knowledge of him within the family other than him arriving in Rush Co Dublin early 1900's having worked in Scotland. I'm still drawn towards the birth record of the unknown McNally, father Joseph a sailor. The birth having taken place in Dublin North Union has me wondering if he was born in a Poor house and was perhaps illegitimate hence no marriage record for Joseph and Emily Doyle.

The birth registration clearly shows child was born at Rotunda Hospital not a 'poor house.'
