Kerrymuir/ Kilmuir Skye
« on: Friday 04 December 20 13:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I have an ancestor that I believe was born in Skye about 1807. No birth record and he migrated South before 1841 census. Several records (daughters birth, census, and death record) state his birthplace as Kerrymuir, Skye or Kerrymuir, Invernesshire.

I have been trying to find out if Kerrymuir might be Kilmuir on Skye today. I have looked at NLS maps but cannot see a location Kerrymuir.

Scotlands Places have three references to Kerrymuir in Forfarshire not Skye.

Anyone come across a location Kerrymuir in Skye? Or any other suggestions where to look.

Thanks

I'd think it should be Kilmuir if it's Skye although I haven't seen the original.

Can you post a clip please with surrounding text for comparison?

Rosinish - probably the most convincing to my mind is his daughters birth in Newtyle. Clip attached.

It looks (to me) like Kenysmuir but I'd say it may not have been heard correctly or someone forgot the correct name when writing it down?

The 1851 Census transcription at FreeCEN has -
Malcolm Bruce 42 Stone quarrier , born Kirriemuir Angus(originally Kirriemuir Inverness-shire)   ???

ev

Added-
The 1841 Census transcription has him born Outside Census County(i.e. outside Angus).
1881 Census has Sky, Inverness.
Not much help.

I think he may have said it in gaelic which is Cille Mhoire which maybe sounded like K(e/i/rriemuir?

Thanks ev. Yes I have the census records. The 1851 GROS original states Kerriemuir, Invernesshire but the ir at end is indistinct. An entry higher up on the census says very clearly Kerriemuir, Forfarshire so I think enumerator knew the difference.

Interesting thought Rosinish. I will have a closer look. See if I can find a double rr elsewhere

Good thinking , Annie  :)

The 1841 Census transcription(FreeCEN) at Kilmuir has 30 entries for surname Bruce.

Annie - Just seen your second post re gaelic. Brilliant. Never thought of that!

ev - Never thought of checking Skye either. I have his 1841 entry in Newtyle but off to Freecen to check out whether his parents might appear. Thanks for the idea.
