Geronimo. Got there at last.  Clearly I am now, today, less of greenhorn than I was yesterday - thanks to the 3 of you.
I must rermember your last remark, Pennines.  T

Really pleased for you Toby. I also hope it is what you wanted to find.

Listen -- NOBODY remembers any remarks I make. I am usually ignored. If you do remember it - I shall be suitably honoured!!

Ready to be put to bed, but one last question. Does anyone know whether this register gets reviewed from time to time for there are many names blacked out? I understand the concept of blacking out people who are still alive but it is not always right. I do believe I am still living but my name is fully visible whereas my uncle who died in 2009 & was born in 1922 is not to be found. In 1939 he had yet to be called up so he should be there.

As far as I know, FindMyPast update on a fairly regular basis - not sure about Ancestry.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

The 1939 register redacts anyone who was born less than 100 years ago (with some errors such as yourself!) and either the NHS updated the record while they still had it to show someone had died OR if the person died after the NHS stopped updating and someone has sent in a death cert to prove that and requested that the record be opened.

Submitting a death cert to FindMyPast to request a record to be opened is free. There is a charge for the National Archives to do it. As far as I am aware they are the only two organisations that are able to remove redaction upon submission of proof.

FMPs database is updated quite quickly. Ancestry updates their records, I believe, about once a year.

So your uncle's record will be opened in 1922, unless you have his death cert and send it to with FindMyPast a request to open the record.

Thank you Tickettyboo for that very clear explanation. All I have to do is to remain patient and , of course, alive. T

remaining alive is a great option :-)

Here's hoping we all do that in these dreadful times.
