Type of ship from photo of gun?

Can anyone give me an indication of the size of this gun and therefore what type of ship this would be? Also perhaps recognise the port in the background? It is possibly Chatham.

I can't help with the gun, but I would NOT think that the background is Chatham - your man is wearing tropical uniform.

It does look like the 4-inch gun, so a bit of reading up on those required, thank you.

I did wonder about the tropical uniform, I take it that it wouldn't have been worn in Britain then?

It looks to me like a QF (Quick Firing) 3-inch gun, possibly the 20 cwt version. These were used on a number of ships during and between the two World Wars, often in a secondary or anti-aircraft role, but its position in front of the bridge suggests it may be the main armament of this vessel.
Not my area of expertise but I'd suggest perhaps, given the tropical uniform, a patrol boat or sloop (?) in the Singapore / Hong Kong area.

I am clutching at straws but my best guess is a sailor Rating or Officer, married with wedding ring,  reading book, educated,  (after World War 2), Penang, Malaya. Or perhaps South Africa. It has to be at a port with a Passenger Railway. Ceylon?

I don't think those are railway carriages in the background.  The windows look to be recessed in stone, and set high in the wall, more like those of a Georgian/Victorian period prison or, possibly, warehouse or store .
