Finding Burial Record

My grandfather, James Henry Forrest, dies in Sunderland on 6th August 1939, in Sunderland Municipal Hospital of Stomach Cancer. Ive been trying to find his burial site, and cant!  Ive checked the index's of all the cemtery's in Sunderland, but cant find any record. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi

Just a thought, check the 1939 register for any known family members, especially his wife.

If found that should give the residence and possibly the Parish (for church records)

Is it possible he was cremated? Those records are more difficult to find in my experience.

 Have you tried Durham Records Online? I have just done a free search on that site and can see a record for a James Henry Forrest in the Sunderland Cemetery Registers which has a death for him in 1939 - born about 1889? Could this be what you are looking for?

There is also a notice in the Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 10 Aug 1939:

" Forrest - At the Municipal Hospital, on August 6, aged 48 years James Henry (better known as Abe), the beloved husband of Mary Ann Forrest. Internment at Sunderland Cemetery on Friday; service at home 1.15. Friends kindly invited. Deeply mourned."

You may have to log in to Family Search in order to see the image - it is free.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
