Where was John NEWINGTON buried in 1800
« on: Monday 07 December 20 06:22 GMT (UK) »
John NEWINGTON of Brighton published his Will 28 Oct 1796 and it was proved 31 May 1800.

Hoping for some assistance to locate where John's remains were interred please?  I looked on the SFHG at both St Nicholas & Christchurch without success so hoping for some assistance please.

On rethinking this one it occurs to me that John's Will whilst wasnt proved till 1800 in effect means his death occured between his last Codicil and the date his Will was proved.

His last Codicil was 7 Jan 1797 and the Will proved 31 May 1800.

I located a burial 17 Jan 1797 at Rottingdean  I now think this is the John I was seeking.
Any thoughts on this hypothesis please?

As Rottingdean is only 4 miles along the coast from Brighton, it certainly sounds like a possibility.
Have you looked to see if there is a Memorial Inscription?
Maybe something in the local newspapers?

Perhaps one of his children lived at Rottingdean? Do you know?
I have several people who died not quite where you thought they would, and some of them turned out to be living with married sons or daughters.

Here is the will
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-D19S-ZSX

It is summarised on The Keep
Probate (Lewes copy) of the will (28 Oct 1796) with two codicils of John Newington of Brighton
3 May 1800
Devises all estate to nephew Thomas Newington of Brighton, tailor, executor, subject to annuities to brother Lawrence and wife, and Thomas's blind son; with other legacies
ESRO Ref CHR 3/5/6

I think the proof that the Rottingdean burial is the right one is also on The Keep.
Affidavit of Thomas Newington of Brighton, gent, that the blind boy mentioned in CHR/3/5/6 was his son John Barnard, who was buried at Brighton on 27 Nov 1804, with extracts of burials of Sarah wife of John Newington, 8 Feb 1722, and John Newington, 17 Jan 1797 from Rottingdean registers
20 Jan 1826
ESRO Ref CHR 3/5/15
https://www.thekeep.info/collections/getrecord/GB179_CHR_3_5_15

I think that burial year for Sarah, wife of John Newington must be wrong! Perhaps 1772?

Incidentally, a chunk of the "other legacies" concern James Sickelmore, his wife, and his daughter Kitty.
Well, all Sickelmores in Brighton are my relatives, so it was nice seeing that!

Thank you John & Goldie,

After other research far and wide and based on that research I feel confident that the burial at Rottingdean is the correct one.  For the strangest of reasons I was fixated on an 1800 burial but I revisited my hypothesis hence being confident of the Rottingdean burial.

As to the Wil I have transcribed it and so John if you would like a copy please PM me.  Good to meet a fellow traveller.
