Without image on FindMyPast as John William Lockwood Byan but that gave me the date and then found the image in the West Yorkshire records on Ancestry but indexed as John William Sayan.

Thanks, Osprey. Hopefully the birth cert will shed some light on the subject.

I am researching this for a close friend whose parents are both in their eighties & wants to compile a family tree while they still have their faculties.  :) :)

John William Lockwood named his last child, Verdun in 1916. Does anybody know if he served in WW1? He would have been about 38 when the war started.

there was something in the recent series of WDYTYA about children being given war related names and it seems it was not uncommon. Nothing to do with if someone served or not, just a patriotic thing to do.

1851 census for the family with a Winterburn present. Head of house is on the previous page and is John Lockwood 28 master tinplate worker.

Thanks for your help, Osprey.

I have now traced the family further back to Joel Lockwood from Saddleworth & Holmfirth. Joel & wife Salley had 11 children including John. Although he gives his birthplace as Holmfirth on census records, he was born in Saddleworth & moved to Malkin House, Holmfirth at an early age. Joel was a woolen weaver & eventually worked ar Hinchcliffe Mill.
