James Chaffey, born Newbury c1832

I am searching for information about the birth and parents of James Chaffey. He married Rachel Sugg in Lewisham in 1856. The 1881 census has James as an upholsterer aged 48, born Newbury, Berkshire. Does anyone know who his parents were?

A copy of the marriage certificate should give the name/occupation of his father to start with.
Witness names can also be helpful. 

Have you found him on the 1851 census (or 1841) ?

In 1861 birthplace for James is Deptford Kent but other years do have Newbury.

This might be him in 1851 but not living with family.

1841 might help when he was a child but can't see one born Berkshire 

All the 1841 John Chaffey seem to be from Dorset/Somerset area.

If nobody else can find anything you will probably have to get a copy of the marriage for more info.

This one in Dorset might be a possible - think it has an "n" for not born in County for the whole family.

The names and ages match the 1841 apart from Joseph is missing - what do you think?

Your James is elsewhere in 1851 as you found and has born Newbury. 

This family is all born Somerset.  Ah well it looked good for a while!
