You'd be surprised but no I don't think yours was.  Bit stumped at the Newbury birthplace.

Hang on just looking at 1871 again which has

Betsey Chaffey 42 sister born Newcross Kent
think it says W for widow so technically she would be sister in law.

Could be a clue though if we can find her maiden name and a marriage for her.

Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Getting complicated but

Marriage 1856 Lewisham

James Chaffey
William Dauncey
Betsey Smith
Rachel Sugg

That is your couple with possibly Betsey

1861 has

William Danncey 34
Betsey Danncey 32 born Deptford Kent
Harvey Smith 7 stepson **
Jane Lugg 68 mother in law

Yep will leave you with that to mull over for tonight :D

** Harvey Sugg Smith born 1853 mothers maiden name Sugg
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Just to add I think Betsey was the sister of Rachel ** not James so doesn't help with his origins sadly.

Marriage 15 Nov 1852 Chislehurst Kent
Betsey Sugg father Thomas to
Harvey Robert Smith father Thomas

son Harvey Sugg Smith

father was a mariner and must have died then Betsey married William and was widowed again.

**together on 1851 census as sisters
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

Milliepede,  I thought you might be interested to know that James's parents were another James born in Axminster, and Ann, born in Hungerford. They moved to London, like their son James!
