Medical Ailment
« on: Tuesday 08 December 20 11:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

This is a Workhouse entry... can anyone read the medical ailment this person had please? The handwriting is lovely but apart from the A at the beginning I’m flummoxed! I’ve Googled Angnorario (which is what it looks like to me) but it doesn’t exist. I’ve asked my doctor friend, she doesn’t know. HELP  :D

Might the last letter be 'c'? I agree with Gadget, looks like 'Argrolatic'.

Can you point us to the record [name, date, which wewbsite] so we can compare handwriting. please?

I'm wondering if it was misheard and it's agro..... but difficult to know. I've been through some of the more usual dictionaries of archaic medical terms  :-\

If you post more of the page, make sure that it's written in the same hand. I see that the one above is in a different hand.

I think it reads 'argrotatio'

I wonder if it was a 'catch all' word used for someone who was generally unwell.

There is a similarity to the Latin word aegrotare which means to be ill, unwell

That would be a typical doctor's ruse, saying that someone was unwell because they were suffering from unwellness (but written in latin to confuse everyone)!

Take a look at the last few entries in the left-hand column. Admittedly this is from a 17th century book, but the word does seem to appear there.

Looks good, Jennifer  :)

I see that it's still used in an  aegrotat degree.
