Looking for a marriage between John Potter & an Elizabeth
« on: Tuesday 08 December 20 20:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,

Hoping anyone can help me find a marriage between a John Potter & Elizabeth. I've been doing pretty well with finding them for this row so I'm hoping it's possible.

They had a daughter in 3 Aug 1783 in Wymondham - Ann Potter

She marries a John Rump in Morley, Norfolk 1807. In the presence of an Elizabeth Potter (could be mum).

They have six children together. I have her and her husband on the 1841, 51 & 61 census.

She dies in 1863, buried in Morely St Botolph.

Now, it looks like they only have the one kid together - Ann Potter. I couldn't seem to find any siblings. And likewise I haven't found a marriage between John & Elizabeth around that time. From what I can see, neither of them made it to the 1841 census.

If anyone can help me find anything, that would be lovely.

Thanks for reading.

Lots of John Potters, but few with wife Elizabeth.

Familysearch has John Potter marrying Elizabeth Lake 6 Nov 1762.
I had a look at it.
It is not Elizabeth at all, but 'Lydia' ( :-\)

There is a marriage of a John Potter to an Elizabeth Dewbery 28.8.1768 in Norwich.
Freereg also has this marriage (transcribed), which gives that this John Potter was a 'widower'.
(Thank goodness Freereg also have the other marriage as the bride being called Lydia Lake!)

No other marriages come up in Norfolk for a John Potter and Elizabeth (from 1760 to 1790).
Of course they may have been married in another County, and you should check for that.

There are a few other baptisms between 1768 and your Ann in 1783 to a John Potter with wife Elizabeth.
Some in Norwich itself, which is only about 10 miles to Wymondham.
Without looking at every entry (images not immediately related to the entries on familysearch), it's going to be very difficult to say if these are the same parents or not. And even then you may not be able to tell if no place of residence is given.

You should also check for any burials for children to John and Elizabeth.

Added: Ancestry seem to have more Norfolk images.

Lane, Burgess: Cheshire. Finney, Rogers, Gilman:Derbys
Cochran, Nicol, Paton, Bruce:Scotland. Bertolle:London
Bainbridge, Christman, Jeffs: Staffs

Looks like the marriage could be at Caston, 30 May 1777
Joseph Potter of Breccles and Elizabeth Curtis
Both single

Some baptisms following at Caston, Wymondham, and Morley.

Was the name John for Ann's father on that 1783 Wymondham baptism a clerical error?
John

Wow, your all brilliant. There it is in the will - daughter Ann, wife of John Rump. I had seen the Joseph Potter/Elizabeth marriage and just thought nothing of it. And thanks for showing me the will site, that could really come in handy.

Case closed,

Thanks everyone.
