"Tory" in place name? What does it mean?
« on: Wednesday 09 December 20 19:51 GMT (UK) »
it's a long shot, but in 1939 some of my relatives were living in a dwelling named 1 Grimpo Tory in the hamlet of Grimpo in West Felton parish in Shropshire. Three consecutive numbered houses are so named, and I can't make it anything but Tory or Tony (there's a long down loop on the last letter) certainly not Town or an abbreviation of Terrace). I thought it might be a one-off but a relative who's searched the pages found a Haughton Tory in the nearby hamlet of that name in the same parish. Google was not my friend this time. Any ideas?

I don't have access to the 1911 at the moment. Grimpo is pretty tiny. We visited one of the daughters there in the 60s (she was my father's cousin) and I don't remember the house - may have been a different one - but I remember how small and remote the hamlet seemed.

I can't help with the Tory name, but at least one person in 1911 used that address - Tom Jones. It looks an interesting place. According to Wiki, it was a squatter settlement on the edge of marshland, and looking at an old map, what may have been the original settlement was semi-circular. You probably already know that, but it interests me!

If it was a squatter settlement, were the squatters Irish? Tory was a derogatory name applied to Irish outlaws including Catholics and Royalists.
It may simply derive from a personal name of an early settler.
Another question on RC today is about a place-name including Tur. One answer recommends a particular dictionary of place-names.

There are one or two mentions of Haughton Tory which is about a mile away.

If I remember, that area of Shropshire has some craggy outcrops (Nesscliffe for eg) - could it be from Tor?

I used to go that way often when my parents were alive but it is a long time ago now.

The tiny Haughton Tory appears to have been gobbled up in the disused Airfield NNE of Haughton village, NE of Grimpo.
