James Longmore - SPECIAL SERVICES AIF 1919-1920
« on: Thursday 10 December 20 06:02 GMT (UK) »
James  Longmore enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) on 20 Aug 1914, less than a month after the start of WW1.  He was assigned to No. 1 Company Field Engineers, service no. 11 and appointed as a Sh. Smith which presumably had something to do with smithing as he was a general blacksmith at the time.
He served  as a member of 12th Engineers at Gallipoli and then in France as a farrier.
He left London for Australia on board D21 "Medic" on 24 Aug 1918 on submarine guard.
His enlistment was terminated on 12 Dec 1918.

He re-enlisted on 30 Sep 1919 in the Special Service AIF, service no. 97746.  He embarked at Sydney on 13 Oct 1919 on board HMAT "Rugia", disembarking in London, England on 16 December.  He returned to Australia soon after, on board the "Friedrichsruh", leaving England on 22 Jan 1920.

Does anyone have any idea what the Special Service may have been doing during that short time?

Regards,
Alison

The link below gives a likely explanation of Special Service AIF:

Description
c.1919-10. Group portrait of some members of the AIF who served on special service as guards and officials on SS Rio Negro when it returned repatriated German internees or prisoners of war (POWs) from Australia to Germany from 1919-08 to 1919-10. There is a light cover of snow on the ground. (Donor B Callaway)

Thanks Tony,

That would never have occurred to me.
