Breen into Brennan?

I'm wondering if anyone has seen the name "Breen" turn into "Brennan?"  Or maybe the reverse? 

On paper, the names seem to have a similar genesis, if one can believe the etymology.  But since both names are common on the 1901 census in Co. Kerry, it almost seems like a random change.  It is hard for me to believe that it is correct.
