CWGC Abbreviations
« on: Thursday 10 December 20 14:47 GMT (UK) »
On the CWGC site, I believe Bn. means Battalion, and Coy. means Company.

Does attd. mean attached? As in 3rd Bn. attd. 5th Bn.

I do think CWGC should provide a glossary on the site.

A man who is attached is serving usually temporarily with a unit that isn't his parent unit so in the example you gave, his parent battalion was 3rd Battalion but he was serving at the time of his death with 5th Battalion.  It is a less permanent move than a posting, bit like a footballer on loan to another club.

For pedants - unfortunately the word is often mis used in other contexts such as "my greatgrandfather was attached to 1st Battalion Loamshires in the Great War" when in all probability he was on the posted strength of that battalion.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

Thank you all.

Thank you for the link, Sandra. Goodness, what a lot of abbreviations there are. I like 'arty' for artillery.

Thank you for the explanation, MaxD. I understand better now.
