James Wood a coal miner from Scotland
« on: Saturday 12 December 20 15:41 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find the birth records for James Wood. He was a coal miner in New Hartley Northumberland who was born born between 1830 and 1833. The census records for New Hartley between 1851 and 1891 show his birthplace as Scotland but no more detail than that. He was married in 1861 to Mary Anne Lloyd, his fathers name is given as Robert Wood. I've looked at the Scottish census information and the few matches I've found show the individuals have either emigrated to the USA or have remained in Scotland. The closest match is for a family in Ayton Berwickshire, or a family in Roxborough but in both cases the individuals seem to be in Scotland in 1851 when James Wood is first recorded in the New Hartley census. I'm wondering if its possible that the family still registers James Wood as living in Scotland even though he has moved to England.

There are three with those characteristics bpt 1829-1834

14 April 1832, Ayton
James son of Robert Wood and Sarah Forrester  ****  you have this one

30 July 1833, Old Machar (Aberdeen)
James son of Robert Wood and Agnes Smith

1 Dec 1833 Melrose
James Wood son of Robert Wood and Jane Drummond

Of these, I would think that the ones from Aytoon or Melrose would be the most likely

What were the names of any children?

Just one small point the one from Melrose had a middle name.

JAMES ROBERT WOOD
ROBERT WOOD/JANE DRUMMOND
01/12/1833 Melrose

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Extending the dates, there are 3 more :

6 March 1836 Newton on Ayr  - was once a coal mining area
son of Robert Wood and Charlotte Douglas

23 Dec 1838 Wemyss
son of Robert Wood and Jean Davidson

add - ColC - I think the OP has discounted the Melrose one

He was married in 1861 to Mary Anne Lloyd

Should this be Mary Ann Laws ?
Looking at FreeBMD and the 1861 Census James is with a Laws family(with a Mary Ann Laws age 22) ?

One tree on Ancestry suggests he was born in Ayton, Berwickshire. He is on the 1841 census there age 9, with his mother Sarah age 35 and 5 siblings but no Robert senior. However James age 18 is still there with his mother and sister Fanny. So it is unlikely to be the correct James.
