GRO search under mother's maiden name?
« on: Sunday 13 December 20 10:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I am searching for my gg grandmother, Emilly Elizabeth Savill(e)'s birth register. I cannot find one anywhere. She was baptised with the name Savill(e). However, the man who brought her up, John Savill(e), wasn't her real father. Her real father was a French man. However, there is no register of birth, even under Savill(e). I cannot find on findmypast a listing for the mother's maiden name of Cakebread either. I have Emily's date of birth as 13 May 1870. Is it possible to search the GRO somehow with just the date, the name of Emily and the mother's name of Susannah Cakebread? I believe she may have been registered with the real father's name, but I don't know it. I am guessing it would be of French origin. Any help, would be gratefully received.

Many thanks,

MJ

No I don't think it is, somebody will correct me if I am wrong.  The 2 required pieces of info are a surname and a gender.  You can use the wildcard options for surname though of sounds like or phonetically similar.

FreeBMD might be a better search engine cos here you can search on first name only, although years have to be quite narrow otherwise the search will be timed out.

Hope this helps,  Pheno

As suggested there are a number of Emily Elizabeth's in the June Quarter of 1870.

Many births were not registered prior to the late 1870's when registration was 'tightened up'

Freebmd does not show mothers maiden surname for the period you are after

No, it doesn't show the maiden name. I have tried searching GRO with any foreign names to see if the maiden name is Cakebread... no luck. I guess it is possible, she never registered her.

Hi

As pheno said, you need Childs surname and gender on the GRO website. The reason you won't find anything under mothers maiden name on FindMyPast, ancestry or Freebmd is because when the births were originally put on there, mothers maiden name wasn't available prior to 1912. As far as I'm aware, only the GRO has mothers maiden name that come up when searching prior to 1912.

MJBatten - Do have an inkling of where Emily was born or her French father's name? How sure are you of the date of birth. It's precise so I guess you must be pretty confident with that. I only ask , because as you've noticed there are other Emily Elizabeth Saville's on findmypast a few years either side of the date you've given.

There is an Emily Saville showing up in the Birth Index for 1870. You, no doubt have more info. Could this be her?
