Judy, there is a possible marriage for a Margaret Telfer that might fit:

Margaret Telfer and James Clapperton
14 Jun 1816 Canonbie
www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTT3-K6G

Monica their marriage is 14th June 1816 but Walter is born to a Margaret Telfer & John Graham or Armstrong on 30th June 1816. So think that may cast doubt upon them being the same Margaret Telfer. What do you think
CUMBERLAND  Armstrong Little Nixon Richardson Pearson Watson Braithwaite
WESTMORLAND  Richardson Dent Nicholson Hanson Kersey Smith Heigh
DURHAM Reed Smith Reay Hammond Metcalf Bell
Thompson Armstrong Branford Parkin Heaton Oates
NORTHUMB'LAND Nixon Johnson Armstrong Branford Thompson
DUMFRIES Armstrong Bell Halliday Little Carruthers Johnstone
YORKS Richardson Branford Siddle
ROXBURGH Jackson Elliot Armstrong Scott
FIFE Adamson Gosman Brown
AUSTRALIA Richardson Dent Hanson Kersey

Those dates would certainly throw a bucket of cold water on that possibility I think  :-\ Unlikely that Margaret Telfer would have given birth just over two weeks before she married James Clapperton... ::)

PS: Judy, I do remember the mad search for Charters Jackson. Happy to see you are still making connections to her!

Hi, just for info, re message # 3.

In the MI's for Canonbie church graveyard there is an entry that
relates to Margaret Telford spouse of James Clapperton who died at Ladyhousestead 7th April1867
aged 72 years. Also James Clapperton who died 19th May1873 aged 79 years.

Matt, that is useful to have  :)

Can I ask, from your references, have you got the full transcription for Walter Armstrong death year 1897? I saw mentioned that apart from his wife/children, there was mention of other family?  In the absence of a death reg for him, might help in trying to confirm more details for him  :)

Thanks for checking, Matt.

Been looking around and just found this:

In loving memory of Walter ARMSTRONG who died at Hollowshill Gate 12th August 1897 aged 81 years. Also Mary Ima his daughter and wife of Wiliam GRAHAM who died 29th January 1894 aged 28 years. Also Ann Richardson ARMSTRONG his granddaughter who died 11th May 1895 aged 10 years. Also Isabella WISHART wife of the above Walter ARMSTRONG who died at Hollowshill Gate Sep 13th 1909 aged 82 years. Also Margaret ARMSTRONG who died at Carlisle December – 1939 aged 80 years.
www.longtown19.co.uk/canonbie_churchyard_a___b.54.html

I read from this that any memorial mention here is of Walter's descendants not ancestors.

Oh good find. That entry is not in the book of MI's.
Have just checked the "Death & Interment Register" for Canonbie Parish which is on Ancestry.
Entry No 16 gives Walters date of death as 28th Aug 1897 aged 80 years & his burial 31st Aug 1897.

Can't understand why his death is not on the registers on SP? Tried all types of searches, down to Wal*/Canonbie/1897/any age. Not been able to find anything  :-\

He is the only Walter Armstrong that I have seen in the parish to fit with the details that Judy has. It in really a matter of to include or exclude really.

Judy, just noted that Walter was actually born on 11 Jan 1816. It was his christening that was on 30 June 1816 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYQL-V41

So, the Margaret Telfer who married James Clapperton, maybe she could be mother?
