Powell Family tree
« on: Monday 14 December 20 00:58 GMT (UK) »
I am curious about an ancestor I have by the name of Edward Powell. The earliest possible record for him is the 1841 Census, where is living in Tonbridge, Kent, with his wife and two daughters. There is actually a marriage certificiate for him and his wife dated in 1807, but that doesn't give much detail about their birthdays. The 1841 Censuses, lists them as being around 1776 and 1786, and both of them put a 'No' to the box asking if they were born in the county. The 1851 Census seems to be more specific. Edward Powell is listed as being born in Merionetheshire, but in 1771 instead of 1776 and Ann Fleming (his wife) is listed as being in Mayfield which is close to Tunbridge but across the county border in Sussex. In both censuses he is a labourer. When I look for birth registration records on 'Ancestry' from anytime between 1770 and 1780, I can't find a single Edward Powell born in the County of Merionethshire. What am I missing?

Is this a possibility? Both Ancestry and FindmyPast have three baptisms in Llanycil parish, Merionethshire for Edward the son of Evan Pool and Jane his wife of Is Mynydd. The dates are 9 Feb 1775, 19 Apr 1778, 3 Jul 1779.

In the same parish there are burials for Edward, son of Evan Pool & Jane, on 30 Apr 1778 and 23 May 1775.

1841 has Edwards 'age' as 65 (ie 65 - 69) and Ann as '55' (ie 55 - 59) rounded down
1851 has Edward 80 and Ann 68

His death in Dec qtr 1853 gives an age of 83.

Edward's birth should be nearer 1771

That could well be the case. Interesting if it is 'Pool' though... Powell is such a Welsh name....

Concerning his wife, Ann Fleming, I was unable to find a Baptism in line with those details (i.e. Mayfield and born between 1770 and 1780).

It may be worth posting on the Sussex boards on here to see if anyone is able to find a baptism for Ann Fleming.

To get back to you guys, how likely would it be for an ancestor to lie about their birthplace, hypothetically? The resources for this Edward Powell/Pool do seem very murky, but I know underreportings of official births were quite common up until the late-19th century. As I am aware, Edward Powell was an agricultural labourer and found himself in Tonbridge around 1800. It is quite a distance to travel, from North Wales to the bottom corner of south-east england, but often work did and the supply of it did take precedence over where people lived or moved to.
Also when you were referring to Edward being the possible son of Evan and Jane Pool, did you mean his wife was from Mynydd? And if so, is this referring the area of Mynydd in Snowdonia or the village in Flintshire?

I think "of Is Mynydd" in the baptism records refer to both Evan and Jane Pool living in Is Mynydd (or Ismynydd?) in Llanycil parish, Merionethshire. It is mentioned here:
