Help with these Navy photos please.
« on: Wednesday 16 December 20 14:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I was hoping someone could help me with these photos. I believe they are from the early 1920s and taken on a British warship probably in the Med, could someone confirm that time period for me based on the uniforms. As you can see there are members of the public posing with the crew, I was wondering under what circumstances this would be allowed? The lady sitting in the middle is my partner's Grandmother, she was a Lady's Maid to Lady Olive Greville, and I think that could possibly be Lady Greville in the second photo with the Captain, could that be the reason the photos were allowed? My partner's Grandmother met her husband while on a grand tour with Lady Greville and he was a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. I'm hoping that these could be photos from that time, but have no reference point. So any help would be gratefully accepted.

Thank you,

Mark.

Hi Mark,
The uniforms in the top photo are indeed Royal Navy. Difficult for me to give you a time frame but I am sure others can, you would not be far out with your 1920s, I would say.
Regarding the second photo - not Royal Navy but a chief officer, Merchant Navy.

I think the female dress would fit with early 20s.

Thank you both.

The Chief Officer of the Merchant Navy throws a bit of a spanner into the works! I wonder if the photo's could have been taken on a Merchant vessel with the sailors visiting?

The second photo was taken ashore not aboard a ship. Are the two photos definitely conected?

The photos were together in the same photo album, so I think so, but can't be certain. One of the sailors in the first photo is my partner's grandfather, we hadn't noticed it before. He was a Petty Officer on HMS Temeraire which was a cadet training ship. In 1920 it embarked on cruise which included various ports in the Med and had as one of cadets, Prince George, fifth child of King George V. The Temeraire was originally a Battleship before being converted, so I'm wondering if this was actually the Temeraire? Here's another photo from the same batch.

A close look at several of the photos on 1907 HMS Temeraire's Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Temeraire_(1907))would certainly suggest that the photograph was taken on HMS Temeraire just in front of the rear superstructure looking towards the stern.

The cross-bracing visible on the rear superstructure in the two photos below is very distinctive, and can be seen in the photo posted above, along with the rear turret and the gun barrels of the turret immediately in front of the rear superstructure.
