Maybe I mucked a bit there...
I believe in the 1851 Census it states it is him in Manchester, although that photo of him is my main source of reference....

It is difficult really. That family tree has several records, as I said. Patrick is shown in censuses with family from 1871.
He enlisted, according to the military record there, in 1852.
He did not marry in a Catholic Church.

If he was baptised Catholic, Carrickmacross registers are too late.

.........although as far as my knowledge it was not as settled extensively by Scottish Presbyterians as the rest of what is now 'Northern Ireland'

Have a look at the list of Presbyterian churches in Co Monaghan, as per John Grenham.

Researching: Cuthbertson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Australia; Hunter – Co. Derry; Jackson – Co. Derry, Scotland & Canada; Scott – Co. Derry; Neilly – Co. Antrim & USA; McCurdy – Co. Antrim; Nixon – Co. Cavan, Co. Donegal, Canada & USA; Ryan & Noble – Co. Sligo

Wow.... I just would have thought that he would be catholic because his family seemingly moved cos' of the famine... That is possibly my ignorance, i was always under the impression that Protestants in Ireland were always socio-economically in a better condition.
