Orphanage or Childrens Home in Winson Green ?
« on: Friday 18 December 20 12:41 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to discover if there was an orphanage or childrens home in Winson Green, Birmingham around 1920's .    I am doing some research for a family member who understood her grandmother and her sister were put into an orphanage in Winson Green when their mother died.   I know sometimes records are kept at Birmingham Archive Dept.

She tells a lovely story of the two sisters running away from the orphanage, but then having to go back because they forgot the glasses of one of them!   Didn't stop them carryon with their 'running away' though.

Thank you for any help.

I live in Birmingham and don't know of any Children's Homes or Orphanages in Winson Green during the time period you specify, maybe other members may have information.

However Birmingham Union Workhouse, Western Road, would have been in the district of
Winson Green in Birmingham.

Thank you for your reply.

Would you know if Birmingham workhouse would have been used to take in children in the 1920's ?

I would have thought so.  If you Google Birmingham Workhouse there is quite a lot of information which may be able to answer your question as to whether they took in children,

Thank you for both replies.   I did look at the website for Birmingham workhouse, certainly it was in Winson Green.   Looking at the Archives at main Birmingham Library, they just have minute records but not admission details for the Workhouse.   I did FH work for someone else whose grandfatheras a child of 9yrs  was put into Middlemore Home, Birmingham and I  found great information in their records at Birmingham main library.   That home seemed to be for the purpose of emigration for the children though.

I will take a look at the other website suggested.
