Elinor (Ellen) Rees 1837-1910 burial Rhymney
« on: Friday 18 December 20 20:25 GMT (UK) »
In August 2020 I posted the following to the Monmouthshire forum but received no reply.  I understand that in 1910, Rhymney was in Monmouthshire though in Caerphilly CBC now, having been in Glamorganshire in the meantime!!  I am posting it again here in the hope that someone on this site might have useful information.

I understand from information passed down through the family that Elinor Rees died on 1 December 1910 and was buried in "Rhymney Church burial ground".

On Free BMD I believe she's the Ellen Rees aged 73 yrs death reg. Dec qtr 1910 Merthyr Tydfil.

I know her husband Edward W Rees died in 1905 and was buried in St Davids Church, Rhymney.  At the time of his death they had been living in Bedlinog, though previously lived in Rhymney.

Unfortunately the graveyard has been very neglected and I have been unable to find any plan of the layout to establish where his grave might be.

I would be very grateful if someone had access to the parish register to see whether she was buried at St Davids too - and what the entry might have included.

Many thanks

Edwards burial entry is on FindMyPast (register image) but looking in the same register late 1910 early 1911 there is no entry for Ellen/Elinor.

Thanks for that Rosie.

I had looked previously at the parish records when I used to have access to Find My Past and saw Edward's burial.  I did look then at later entries and could not find Elinor/Elinor/Eleanor.

But just this year I found a distant relative who is the great grandchild of Edward and Elinor.

She actually has a Family Bible with Elinor's date of death and that she was buried in "Rhymney Church burial ground".

I had therefore wondered whether I had failed to spot Elinor's burial in the parish records.

It is a mystery then that the burial was not recorded in the book.  (I don't think it is likely that their son wrote the wrong information in the Bible.)

Any ideas how that could be?

Many thanks again for looking this up for me.

I have no idea why a burial would not be entered in a register, there are very few taking place in this churchyard at that time.

Many thanks again for your reply.

I am trying to think this through.... both Edward and Elinor lived in Bedlinog at the time of their deaths, having previously lived in Rhymney.  Hence - I guess why he was buried there.

And their son Davy who ended up with the Bible was known for being meticulous in record keeping at work and home according to my newly found relative so it is not likely he got the location wrong.

But what if he did - I am wondering whether she was buried in Gelligaer parish church yard???  Bedlinog was in the parish of Gelligaer.....

Find a Grave comes up with nothing (as usual in my experience!)

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

If you got the pdf of her death then you could find out exactly where Ellen died, which may or may not help.

One of the others with the same GRO ref is Letitia Jones, age 59
She was buried 3 Dec 1910, Pontlottyn
Abode seems to be in Bedlinog

Ditto William Thomas Teague, Dec 1910, Merthyr, 11a 369
Buried Pontlottyn, 2 Dec 1910, age 15 days, abode Quarry Row, Bedlinog

Not the only ones  from Bedlinog, followed by three more, last on 17 Dec.
Then the register stops, or at least the images on ancestry do!

The first three burials recorded in December 1910 in Pontlottyn do seem to be out of order.
Letitia Jones, 3 Dec
Violet Howell, 1 Dec (age only 14 hours)
W T Teague, 2 Dec
