1874 Peak Downs
« on: Saturday 19 December 20 06:38 GMT (UK) »
I hesitate posting this little photo of my Danish ancestors, since it is in such poor condition. The paper begins to crumble the moment you touch it. It was taken in 1874 in Peak Downs - Copperfield, a mining community in central Queensland. It is the only photo I have of the family who were newly arrived immigrants.
Is there anyone brave enough or willing to attempt a restoration? I prefer the natural sepia tones, so colour is not required. Many Thanks.

Hello Neal

We'll try to get something out of it but it might take some time.

This is a small version of the photo with the saturation taken right down and contrast/levels adjusted. Note the roughness of the surface. I've reduced this in the version I'm working on. The faces will  be reconstructions so the likenesses will only be guesswork in some.

I'm not sure when I'll finish. Some restorers might  be speedier.

Please note - this is a small version of the first steps. A long way from final

Here is a B&W and a sepia version.  Not the best by far, but might be slightly more visible.

Thank you Gadget and John for giving this a go. I can see a difference already.
There is no hurry, Gadget. Take as long as you wish. I appreciate your help. I am realistic about the outcome of any restoration, because what you have to work with is very little indeed.

I've done a bit more to it, Neal, but it will be a  day or so.

It is a lovely family group  :)

Until part way through my second failed attempt I didn't realise that that amorphous lump down the bottom was a little dog. ;D Here's my third try and, as Gadget said, some of the faces are necessarily reconstructions rather than restorations. Cheers :)

You've done well. Peter.

I'm still working on it - Christmas chores are getting in the way. I couldn't decide  about the black splodge - was it a dog or just a mark  :-\

I'll get it done though  :)
