Rubbathan

Kia ora

I have a note from my late mothers that says:
Rubbathan colonel regiment of Earl of Gawyn in Duke of Wellington Army - frost bitten while on sentry duty and lost both legs.  Granted pension - farmed. Lived Montgomeryshire.

I think this is the man she is talking about but I am not absolutely sure, it was definitely a Rubbathan

Edward Rubbathan husband of Jane Colley
b.1762 Aug 22 parish of St Mark, Frodesley, Atcham, Shropshire
m.1792 Sept 2 Edward Rubbathon & Jane Colley, St Mark, Acton Burnell.. mar. (copy of banns Acton Burnell, Aug 12)
d.1842 Oct>Dec Atcham, Shropshire, Eng. (Rubberthan) (88?)

I haven't managed to find out anything about the Regiment of Earl of Gawyn, any help gratefully received.

Can't find any mention, anywhere, of an Earl of Gawyn?

Also, in 1751, Regiments of the British Army were given numbers. E.G. 33rd Regiment of Foot.
This changed in 1782 when regiments were linked to a county.
Before 1751 regiments were named after their colonel.

In an earlier thread you said he was in the regiment of the Earl of Powys?

This is probably him: Edward Rowberthan born  circa 1767 at Pitchford near Shrewsbury.

Shropshire Militia. Discharged to pension in 1795 having had his legs amputated.

…by reason of a fever which he contracted on his leaving the camp at Worley last year and which after some weeks terminated in a  mortification of both his feet, for which  he was obliged to undergo amputations of his legs…

Many, many thanks.  Firstly I had another look at my Mother's handwriting again and decided that perhaps I had the Powys thing wrong but I couldn't find a Gawyn either but thought someone might know.  I did know that they were somehow connected with Powys however.  I think the Edward that ShaunJ has found for me will be him.  The variation in name was probably the stumbling block for me.

I really appreciate all the information sent to me explaining some things from that time regarding regiments etc.

Stay safe.
