William Carr, Perth
« on: Monday 21 December 20 23:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi

William Carr (1870-1946) married Agnes McIntosh (1874-1954) Perth.

On their wedding record, William's parents are listed as William Carr and Margaret Kettle.

In 1854, William Carr married JANET Kettle. Would you think that this could be the same couple at all? Or is it highly unlikely with the name Janet and Margaret being so different.
William is listed as a shoe maker on both records but perhaps that's just coincidence. I'm not sure how to figure it out. Anyone else come across these folk?
Thanks in advance,
Kerry

Per Scotlands People - William Carr married Janet Kettle 16.2.1851 Kinnoull

EDIT

Can't see any 1854 marriage - was that a typo?

Kerry, some notes for the Carr/Kettle (Janet) family here http://www.smeaton.org/Smeaton_Detailed_Genealogy.pdf starting from pg 65:

65.  JANET"JESSIE"7 KETTLES (WILLIAM6, MARGARET5 SMEATON, JAMES4, JOHN3, DAVID2, DAVID1) was born Mar20, 1831 in Perth, PER, SCT.  She married WILLIAM CARR Feb 16, 1851 in Kinnoul, PER, SCT.  He was born1826 in Perth, PER, SCT, and died 1890 in Perth, PER, SCT...........

Annie, William Jnr's death in 1946 looks to have been in Scotland so that should hopefully provided further confirmation of his mother's details (as always, if known to the informant).

Apologies, yes it is 1851 William and Janet were married.

Wiliam Junior's death, in 1946, was indeed in Scotland. His parents are listed as William Carr, shoe maker and Janet Kettles. All seems to fit.

Would you think it safe to presume that Margaret was written in error on the marriage certificate?-would that be a common occurrence?

Perhaps Janet and Jessie are the same person.

Monica, thank you for that link. Wonderful.

Jessie is a very strong variant for Jessie. See this site for first name variants www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Jessie.html

Monica

PS: I do think the use of Margaret was an error by someone when recording the marriage (might have been the clerk rather than William himself).

A mistake like that is possible. There were three copies of the certificate - the paper copy the couple got, the copy written into the register held by the local registrar, and the copy of the register sent to Edinburgh. It's the Edinburgh version that's on Scotland's People. My grandmother was born on 25th May according to her, to her birth certificate and to the local copy of the register. For some reason the Edinburgh version has her born on 25th April - a clerical error.
