Parents of John Tansley born 1810
« on: Tuesday 22 December 20 14:36 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage entry for my ancestor John Tansley on the 22nd June 1837 in Northborough Northamptonshire.  He married Jane Kettel and there is no father recorded in the entry that mentions the fathers name for the bride and groom.  Could both of them my 4x great grandparents have been born illegitimate?  There is a baptism for John Tansley on the 9th January 1810 son of William and Alice in Deeping Saint James Lincolnshire, which is right on the county border with Northamptonshire.  Jane Kettel may also be from that county.

Fathers names did not generally appear on marriage certificates in June 1837, they started to appear on July 1st of that year when general registration started

The marriage is not from a marriage certificate as it was before 1st July.  I thought they included fathers names before then.  There is just a diagonal line through the column in the original entry.

Yes.  You are correct.  His father is supposed to be William Tansley and Alice Tory.  Was Jane born illegitimate as I found a baptism for her that says base child.

Just a thought.  The churches would have been using these new registers in the weeks before the new 'rules' came into effect so it is likely that some clergy filled in the fathers details and others did not prior to the start of 'registration'

Where are the family in 1851

In Lincolnshire.  I have found a death for a John Tansley in 1854 in the county.  By 1861 his son my 3rd great grandfather Henry was living in the north riding of Yorkshire and was an iron miner.  I will have to further into John Tansley when I have time.  Many thanks.

It's on its side  but I am unsure if it's from the Bishop's transcripts.  It is very legible.
