I've found some brilliant stuff in newspapers, I'd go for that without hesitation.
Something else I used a lot too, as I've family ties in Hampshire is the Hampshire Record Office, online catalogue. Free to search and a very friendly service, photocopies of documents are very cheap (last time I used it) and I just had a peek, over 200 items relating to Crockford back to the 1700's

I have already given myself my Christmas present. My boiler packed up two weeks ago, four days without heating meant I  had to by myself a new gas boiler. Thankfully I don’t have to resort to bread and scrape for my Christmas dinner.

I would recommend a sub to The British Newspaper Archive.
I have found some really interesting things all over the country

I.e Adverts for the Grandfather I never knew coach business including traffic fines in the court pages for balding tyres and showing headlights during the war.

My Nans wedding intimation where my Godmother aged 3 presented her with a lucky black cat.

Adverts for domestic servants for my Victorian house and the adverts for the plots of land being sold where the houses were to be built in 1897.

The inquest report into the death of my father’s uncle who died in a pit collapse in the 1930s

That’s what I remember of the top of my head.
