John William Smith Marine Engineer born circa 1860 in Yorkshire.
« on: Wednesday 23 December 20 05:03 GMT (UK) »
John William Smith was my great grandfather whose son Alfred Harold Smith (my grandfather) migrated to Australia in 1912 and then returned to the UK in 1916 to fight on the Western Front. John married Sarah Elizabeth Kay in Sculcoates in 1879. I have managed to trace Sarah's ancestors but not so with John. The only census record I can find for him is in 1891 which estimated he was born in 1860 in Yorkshire, presumably in or around Hull given his marriage to Sarah in Sculcoates.  Sarah appears as head of household in other censuses, presumably because John was away at sea. Using FamilySearch I did find a John William Smith christened on 29 September 1861 in Hull whose parents were Henry and Eliza Smith. However I can find no record of Henry or Eliza. Any help would be appreciated.

Don’t you have the marriage certificate?

The marriage has his father as David Paxton ( or Payton ) Smith a Captain  and John is a Plumber.

With that information you can find the family easily in 1861.

John William is 0.

19 May 1843 - Hull Advertiser and Exchange Gazette

David Paxton Smith, a young lad, who it appeared, was very fond of aquatic excursions, but was not over scrupulous as to whose boats he made use of,  was ordered to pay a surety of £5 to be of good behaviour, he having left a boat unmoored which - along with some other lads - he had taken from a keel to go on a pleasure party.
