Jane must have died at some point
In 1901 Captain DP has a wife Marian, she is 40 he is 70.

Interestingly the brother of John William Smith, David Paxton Smith (junior) died in New Zealand.

In memory of my mother Jane, wife of David Paxton Smith, master Mariner, 35 Hutt Street, Who died June 9th 1900 age 73.



So he didnít hang around for the remarriage.  Would be interesting for you to get his will. He left a reasonable amount for the time. Wonder if the new wife got it all.  :)

If you search the newspapers with just 35 Hutt-street. It looks as though he may have had properties that he let.
Also search with David P Smith, and D.P. Smith for various other items
There is quite a  lot of information to be found.
