I can remember that at the start of Alexa there were reports of Amazon employees listening to conversations etc.  This was back in about mid 2019.  Whether that is still the case or not I don't know.

Alexa would be no good to me as my deafness means I wouldn't hear what was being said.   :)

I wouldn't be keen on a device that seems to know all that you do.  The internet is bad enough with what it probably knows about you.

I wondered about that Girl Guide. However, I have only used it so far for the news and radio. Have to say the Amazon staff would find my mutterings to self pretty dull!
