Joseph Henry Gregg b 1861 Wolverhampton
« on: Thursday 24 December 20 18:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello all
I've got one of those brick walls and hoped for some help.  I have Joseph Henry Gregg b 1861 to Henry Gregg and Frances in Wolverhampton.

This is what "I Think" I know.

I have him in 1871 and 1881 living at home in Wolverhampton, I have his marriage cert to Mary Ann Haslam in wolverhampton 27 nov 1883. (She is living in wolverhampton, but is from Ramsbottom).

I have his first child Henry born in Accrington 5 July 1884, and then twins Samuel and Walter born in Wolverhampton on 15 October 1885.  Then there is a child on later census called Harold b 1891 wolverhampton, (who keeps the name Gregg despite other half siblings changing to Melling) Then he vanishes, presumably died. As in 1891 Mary Ann is a widow in Wolverhampton, but by 1901 & 1911 she is still Mary Ann Gregg but listed as married, presumably to the James Melling she lives with.

My dilema is where did Joseph go? He may have gone by Harry or Henry, or Joseph, or a combination of all of them. But I cannot find a death cert.... can anyone help?

There's a Harold Melling the right age in Wolverhampton in 1939 - he marries and dies there under that name as well

Its strange isn't it! Harold was the last one who kept the gregg name by 1911, the later children went by Melling on 1901 then Gregg Melling in 1911, by then Mary Jane is also calling herself Melling. So I dont know if the later kids were given the name gregg as MaryJane had them by Melling after Joseph had died.

I haven't checked it yet but a 39 link was found for Harold Melling, so maybe he wasn't Josephs last, and the twins were. So possibly Joseph died from early 85 onward in Accrington.

I am pretty sure now that something must have happened to Joseph Henry and Mary in Accrington, and that Mary moved back to Wolverhampton to be nearer all their families, as I cannot find any references to him after the birth of Henry.

Does anyone know if there is a way to check online for railway staff records in different districts?

Ancestry have - UK Railway Employment Records - 1833-1956

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
